On a loading dock, in a lab or in a classroom, the same kind of question comes up again and again. How many pounds of liquid nitrogen is that in standard cubic feet? What is that pressure in bar? Cyl-Tec’s Gas and Unit Converter answers those questions in a couple of taps. The free app “combines a gas convertor, a unit calculator, and a Cyl-Tec product guide all into one,” and it is built with AppPresser.

In this featured app spotlight, we take a closer look at the team behind Gas and Unit Converter, what the app does, who it serves, and why it is such a strong example of what happens when a WordPress site and a mobile app work together.

Who Is Behind Cyl-Tec

Cyl-Tec, Inc. is a supplier to the compressed gas industry, headquartered in Aurora, Illinois and online at cyl-tec.com. The company makes and sells steel and aluminum compressed gas cylinders, cryogenic liquid cylinders, vacuum jacketed TITAN bulk tanks, Aerosphere CO2 monitoring solutions and the Level-Eye liquid level monitor, along with valves, parts and accessories. It also runs a cryogenic vessel repair facility and cylinder bake-out services. Its mission is “to serve the needs of the compressed gas industry by providing exceptional value, high-quality products, and expert customer service,” and its motto sums up the goal: “One Resource. Zero Headaches.”

Cyl-Tec started as a Bennett family business in 1991. Jim Bennett founded it with help from his father, George, as a cylinder re-test and cryogenic cylinder repair company in Franklin Park, Illinois. Jim’s brother John joined later that year, and another brother, Tom, came on board in 1997 and began offering gas distributors new products, starting with gas cylinders. The company moved to a new building in Aurora in 1995, expanded again in 2012 by buying the 971 W. Industrial Drive building, and today operates from a 170,000 square foot facility, with additional warehouse locations in other U.S. cities and Canada.

In December 2021, Tom and John Bennett sold the company to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and Cyl-Tec became 100% employee owned. The company has said it is one of only about half of the roughly 6,500 U.S. companies with an employee ownership plan that are fully employee owned, and the trade publication gasworld covered the change. At the start of 2025, Tom Bennett became CEO, Elliott Levine stepped into the role of President and Kirill Zelin was promoted to Operations Director. In February 2026, Cyl-Tec marked 35 years in business.

What the Gas and Unit Converter App Does

The Gas and Unit Converter takes the conversions that people in the gas business do every day and puts them on one clean home screen. Instead of searching for a chart, working out a formula or opening a generic converter that has never heard of standard cubic feet, users tap the gas or the unit they need, enter a value and get the answer right away.

Here are the main areas the app covers:

  • Convert Gas, which instantly calculates liquid or gaseous measurements for argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, in units such as gallons, liters, pounds, kilograms, NM3 and SCF.
  • Convert Units, a general unit calculator for area, distance, pressure, temperature, volume and weight, handling conversions like pounds to metric tons, psi to bar, feet to meters and Fahrenheit to Celsius.
  • Products, a quick reference guide to Cyl-Tec’s main product lines, with specifications and model comparison lists.
  • Contact Us, which puts Cyl-Tec’s customer service a tap away for questions and quotes.
  • Website, a shortcut from the home screen to the full Cyl-Tec site and its product catalog.

A few touches make the app feel built by people who know the industry. Each gas gets its own tile with its chemical symbol (Ar, CO2, He, H2, N2 and O2), so the right one is easy to spot at a glance. The gas screens note the reference conditions behind the math: SCF figures are measured at 1 atmosphere and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and liquid figures at 1 atmosphere and boiling temperature. Every result is rounded to three decimal places, and a Change Gas Selection or Change Unit Selection button lets users switch without starting over.

The app is free, and it has been around for a long time. It first launched on the App Store in July 2015, and Cyl-Tec relaunched it on both the Apple and Google stores in 2025. The company has said it plans to add features in 2026 that will let customers submit requests for quotes on cylinders and cryogenic tanks directly through the app.

Key Features That Stand Out

One Home Screen

Everything starts from a single home screen with the Cyl-Tec logo and four large buttons: Convert Gas, Convert Units, Products and Contact Us. Below them, a Website banner leads to the full Cyl-Tec site. A bottom bar keeps Home, Convert Gas and Convert Units one tap away from anywhere in the app, so jumping between a gas conversion and a unit conversion takes no effort.

Gas Calculator

The gas calculator is the heart of the app. Six tiles cover argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, and each one converts between liquid and gaseous measurements such as gallons, liters, pounds, kilograms, NM3 and SCF. A note on every screen explains the reference conditions behind the numbers, which is exactly the kind of detail a gas professional wants to see before trusting a result.

Unit Calculator

For everything else, the unit calculator handles area, distance, pressure, temperature, volume and weight. Each category has its own illustrated tile, and the conversions cover the units that come up in the field, from psi to bar and pounds to metric tons to feet to meters. It means one app can replace a handful of separate converters and printed charts.

Easy to Use

Using the app is as simple as picking a unit on each side, entering a value and reading the answer. Two scrolling lists sit side by side so the from and to units are always visible, and results are rounded to three decimal places. A single button changes the selection, so running several conversions in a row is quick.

Who Gas and Unit Converter Serves

The first audience is the compressed gas industry itself. Gas distributors, welding supply businesses, fill plant operators, drivers and sales teams regularly need to translate between liquid and gas quantities, or between U.S. and metric units, while talking to a customer or standing next to a tank. For them, the Gas and Unit Converter is a dependable tool that lives in the pocket instead of on a laminated chart in the office.

The app also serves Cyl-Tec’s own customers in a more direct way. The product guide gives buyers a quick reference to cylinders, cryogenic tanks and other product lines, with specifications and model comparisons, and the Contact Us button connects them with Cyl-Tec’s customer service team. With request for quote features planned, the app is set to become an even more useful link between Cyl-Tec and the distributors it supplies.

Finally, Cyl-Tec built the app with education in mind. Its listing describes it as a resource for professors, teachers and students, and it is easy to see why. Students learning about gas laws, cryogenics or engineering units can check their work in seconds, and instructors get a free, ad free tool they can recommend to a whole class.

Technology Behind the App

The Gas and Unit Converter is powered by Cyl-Tec’s own WordPress site, cyl-tec.com.

The app is built from WordPress, and WordPress drives it. Product information lives on the WordPress site, and AppPresser carries that content straight into the app, so updates made on the site show up in the app without a separate system to manage.

Looking at the site itself, these are the platforms behind the experience:

  • WordPress logoWordPress, the foundation for the company website. WordPress is the open source content management system that powers more websites than any other platform.
  • Kadence logoKadence with Kadence Blocks Pro, for design. Kadence is a lightweight WordPress theme with a block library.
  • WooCommerce logoWooCommerce, which runs the online store. WooCommerce is the open source ecommerce plugin that turns WordPress into an online store.
  • Gravity Forms logoGravity Forms, for the site’s forms. Gravity Forms is a WordPress form builder plugin used for contact forms, registrations and more.
  • AppPresser logoAppPresser, which turns the WordPress site into the mobile app. AppPresser is a mobile app builder that creates native iOS and Android apps from a WordPress site.

What Gas and Unit Converter Shows About AppPresser

Gas and Unit Converter is a great example of an AppPresser app that is a tool first. Cyl-Tec runs its company website on WordPress at cyl-tec.com, where its product lines, specifications and company news already live. With AppPresser, the company was able to turn its expertise into a native app for iPhone, iPad and Android, with a simple branded home screen, fast calculators and a direct path back to its products and team.

That matters for a manufacturer. A practical tool that people use every week keeps a company’s name in front of its customers far better than a brochure, and it builds trust by being genuinely helpful. Because the app is connected to the WordPress site, product information and links stay tied to the same content the team already manages, so the app does not become another system to maintain.

The app also shows how long an AppPresser app can serve a business. Gas and Unit Converter first launched in 2015, it is still being updated, and Cyl-Tec is now planning new features on top of it. It is proof that AppPresser apps go well beyond content, and that a company in a specialized, hands on industry can use WordPress and AppPresser to put something useful in the hands of the people it serves.

Congratulations to Tom Bennett, Elliott Levine and the employee-owners of Cyl-Tec on building an app that makes everyday work in the compressed gas industry a little easier. We are proud to have AppPresser behind it.
