How Much Does a Mobile App Cost in 2026? (And Why It Doesn’t Have to Be $50,000)
“How much does a mobile app cost?” is one of the first questions business owners ask me. Most of the time, they’ve already searched it, seen a number with a lot of zeros, and quietly decided an app isn’t for them.
I get it. I’ve been building websites and apps for more than 25 years, and the quotes you find online are real. But for a lot of businesses and organizations, they’re answering the wrong question. Here’s what apps actually cost in 2026, why the typical numbers are so high, and when you can get a real App Store app for a small fraction of that.
Custom mobile app cost in 2026
If you hire a development firm to build an app from scratch, here are the ranges you’ll typically see quoted today:
- Simple app: about $30,000 to $100,000
- Mid-size app: about $40,000 to $200,000
- Complex app: $150,000 to $400,000 and up
And that’s just to build it. Industry estimates put ongoing upkeep at about 15% to 25% of the build cost every year to keep an app running: bug fixes, iOS and Android updates, security patches, and hosting. On a $40,000 app, that’s another $6,000 to $10,000 a year, every year.
Why custom apps cost so much
It’s not because developers are padding the bill. A from-scratch app means building a lot of things at once:
- Two apps, not one. iPhone and Android are different platforms, and both need to be designed, built, and tested.
- A backend. Your app needs somewhere to store content, user accounts, and data, plus a way to serve it to the app.
- A way to update it. Someone has to build an admin area so your team can update content, post news, or add an event.
- App Store work. Apple and Google each have their own review rules, and apps get rejected for all kinds of reasons.
For a lot of businesses, that backend and admin area is the most expensive part. And here’s the thing: if your website runs on WordPress, you already have one.
The shortcut: your WordPress site is already the hard part
WordPress already stores your content, manages your users, and gives your team an easy way to update everything. That’s exactly what a custom app backend does.
That’s the idea behind AppPresser. Instead of building a new backend from scratch, your app pulls from the WordPress site you already have. When you update your site, the app updates too. You don’t need a second system to manage, and your team doesn’t have to learn anything new.
You still get a real app in the Apple App Store and Google Play, with your name and logo on it, plus the features that matter most:
- Push notifications that land right on your customers’ lock screens
- Your content, events, and pages, pulled straight from your site
- Memberships, WooCommerce stores, and online courses, if your site already uses them
- Apple and Google login, and in-app purchases
Mobile app cost with AppPresser
Here’s our current pricing, straight from our pricing page:
- Standard: $59 a month billed annually ($708 a year), for one iOS and Android app
- Professional: $79 a month billed annually, with a much higher push notification limit
- Advanced: $129 a month billed annually, for two apps
Monthly billing is available too. On top of that, Apple charges $99 a year for a developer account and Google charges a one-time $25. Those go directly to them, and anyone publishing an app pays them, no matter who builds it.
You can build the app yourself with our app customizer, or have our team build it and launch it for you. If you want us to do it, we’ll quote that as a one-time service.
Side by side: the first three years
Here’s a rough comparison for a simple app, using the low end of the custom range and our Standard plan billed annually:
| Custom-built app | WordPress + AppPresser | |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | About $40,000 to build | About $832 ($708 + Apple + Google) |
| Each year after | About $6,000 to $10,000 in maintenance | About $807 |
| Three-year total | About $52,000 to $60,000 | About $2,450 |
| Who updates content | A new admin system your team has to learn | Your existing WordPress site |
Your numbers will vary, but the gap is real. For many businesses, it’s the difference between “not in our budget” and “why didn’t we do this sooner?”
When a fully custom app is worth it
I’ll be honest: a WordPress-powered app isn’t the right fit for everything. If you’re building a new product with features that don’t exist anywhere else, like real-time tracking, complex marketplaces, heavy use of the phone’s hardware, or an app that is your business, a custom build may be the better investment.
Our team builds those too. But most businesses and organizations don’t need that. They need a simple way to put their business on their customers’ phones, send a push notification when something matters, and keep everything in sync with the website they already maintain.
Questions to ask before you get a quote
- Is my website already on WordPress? If so, a lot of the expensive work is already done.
- What should the app actually do? Write down the three things your customers would use it for most. You may need far less than you think.
- Who will update it? An app nobody updates goes stale fast. If it runs off your website, it stays current on its own.
- What will it cost in year two and three? Always ask about maintenance, not just the build.
The bottom line
For a custom build from scratch, the typical mobile app cost is $40,000 or more, plus thousands a year to keep running. If your website already runs on WordPress, you can skip most of that and get your own app in the Apple App Store and Google Play for a small fraction of the price.
