Featured App: Accidental Talmudist by Salvador Litvak
On March 2, 2005, a Hollywood filmmaker walked into a Jewish bookstore in Los Angeles to buy one book and walked out with a new calling. That day happened to be the first day of a new Daf Yomi cycle, the worldwide practice of studying one page of Talmud every day. Seven and a half years later, Salvador Litvak had read the entire Talmud, and he has been sharing what he learned ever since. Today Accidental Talmudist reaches millions of people around the world, and its app, built with AppPresser, brings all of that wisdom, humor and inspiration together in one place. Its users have given it a perfect 5.0 star rating on iPhone.
In this featured app spotlight, we take a closer look at the people behind Accidental Talmudist, what the app does, who it serves, and why it is such a strong example of what happens when a WordPress site and a mobile app work together.
Who Is Behind Accidental Talmudist
Salvador Litvak is a Chilean American filmmaker who wrote and directed the theatrically released feature films When Do We Eat? and Saving Lincoln. His newest film, Guns & Moses, is an action thriller about a small town rabbi, starring Mark Feuerstein, Neal McDonough and Christopher Lloyd. But many people know him best by another name: the Accidental Talmudist.
The name comes from that unplanned trip to the bookstore. Litvak had been a practicing Jew for several years but had always felt intimidated by the massive volumes of Talmud on the shelves. When he learned that a new study cycle was beginning that very day, he took it as a sign. He studied a page every day for seven and a half years, and in August 2012 he joined about 90,000 people at MetLife Stadium to celebrate the completion of the cycle. His story became a Jewish Journal cover story.
Having read the entire Talmud, Litvak wanted to share it. For centuries, Talmud study had been the province of a small, highly religious group. He believed its wisdom belonged to everyone. He started an Accidental Talmudist blog at the Jewish Journal, then a website and a Facebook page, where he and his wife Nina share original Jewish content six days a week. The Facebook page has grown to more than one million followers.
Accidental Talmudist is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a clear mission: to share the light of Jewish wisdom with millions of people around the world, giving them spiritual and practical tools for a meaningful life. As the team puts it, “We make Torah and Talmud accessible to all without dumbing it down.” Litvak also hosts AT Daily, a Talmud study show on Facebook Live and YouTube that has passed 2,400 episodes, and he edits the Table for Five column for the Jewish Journal.

Key Features That Stand Out
Deep Wisdom, Made Approachable
The Talmud can feel overwhelming, even to people who grew up around it. Accidental Talmudist breaks it into bite sized lessons with clear explanations and real life applications. The Daily Talmud section and AT Daily classes make it possible for anyone to follow along, one page at a time, just as Litvak did.
Humor With a Heart
Laughter has always been part of Jewish tradition, and Accidental Talmudist embraces it. The Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time series is a fan favorite, and its videos regularly reach large audiences online. In the app, the jokes sit right alongside Torah and Talmud, a reminder that wisdom and joy belong together.
Stories of Forgotten Heroes
The Heroes section tells the stories of people whose courage deserves to be remembered, from resistance fighters to righteous rescuers. These stories are some of the most moving content Accidental Talmudist publishes, and the app makes them easy to discover.
Made to Be Shared
Accidental Talmudist grew on social media, and the app keeps that spirit. Memes, viral videos and quotes are designed to be passed along, with a save to phone option, so a single teaching can travel to friends, family and group chats in seconds.
Everything in One Place
With articles, videos, classes, jokes, memes and music spread across many platforms, it could be hard to keep up. The app’s simple menu organizes it all, with Home, Viral, Read, Watch, Classic Texts and Connect sections, plus halachic times and giving.
A Perfect 5.0 Rating
Ratings are one of the most honest signals an app can earn. At the time of writing, Accidental Talmudist holds a perfect 5.0 rating from its iPhone users and a strong 4.4 rating on Android. That says a lot about the experience: the content is rich, the design is inviting, and readers feel at home.
It also says something about the community Litvak and his team have built. Over more than a decade, they have earned the trust of a large, global audience. Seeing that trust carry over into the app is a real accomplishment.

What This App Shows About AppPresser
The Accidental Talmudist website runs on WordPress, and that matters. The site already holds years of articles, Torah teachings, hero stories, jokes, videos and classes. With AppPresser, that content does not need to be rebuilt somewhere else. The app draws from the same WordPress site the team already manages every day.
For a small team publishing six days a week, that is a big deal. When a new teaching, video or meme goes up, it appears in the app automatically. Litvak and his team can focus on creating and teaching, not on running a separate mobile platform.
Accidental Talmudist also shows how an AppPresser app can organize a very large library. Multiple content types, custom sections, video, sharing tools and giving all live together in a design that feels fun and inviting. It is a great example of a content creator turning a social following into an owned channel.
Congratulations to Salvador Litvak, Nina Litvak and the entire Accidental Talmudist team on building an app that has earned a perfect 5.0 rating.
