Featured App: Heidelapp from the Heidelberg Reformation Association

Some ministries are built around a building. The Heidelblog is built around a confession. For years, Dr. R. Scott Clark and a team of contributors have been writing, teaching and podcasting to help Christians rediscover Reformed theology, piety and practice. Heidelapp, built with AppPresser, brings all of that work together in one place on iPhone, iPad and Android, and its users have given it a perfect 5.0 star rating on iPhone.

In this featured app spotlight, we take a closer look at the people behind the Heidelblog and the Heidelcast, what the app does, who it serves, and why it is such a strong example of what happens when a WordPress site and a mobile app work together.

Who Is Behind Heidelapp

Heidelapp is published by the Heidelberg Reformation Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Escondido, California. The association is the parent organization of the Heidelblog, the Heidelcast and all of what its audience affectionately calls Heidelmedia. Its stated purpose is to promote Reformed theology, piety and practice as summarized in the Heidelberg Catechism and related confessions, including the Belgic Confession, the Canons of Dort and the Westminster Standards.

The name comes from the German city of Heidelberg, where in 1563 the Reformed church adopted an explanation of the Christian faith in the form of questions and answers. That document, the Heidelberg Catechism, opens with one of the most beloved questions in church history: “What is your only comfort in life and in death?” The Heidelblog exists, in its own words, to explain and encourage a return to the historic understanding of Scripture as confessed by the Reformed churches.

The association’s founder and president is Dr. R. Scott Clark. He was educated at the University of Nebraska, Westminster Seminary California and St Anne’s College, Oxford, where he earned his DPhil. He was ordained in 1988, has been a minister in the United Reformed Churches in North America since 1998, and is professor emeritus of church history and historical theology at Westminster Seminary California. He is the author of Recovering the Reformed Confession and, most recently, The Heidelberg Catechism: A Historical, Theological, and Pastoral Commentary from Lexham Press.

The Heidelcast, the association’s official podcast, began in 2009, making it one of the oldest Reformed podcasts anywhere. It has grown into a full family of shows, including the Heidelminicast for listener questions, Superfriends Saturday, multi part teaching series, and Heidelcast Live! streaming events. With that much content published every week, a dedicated app was a natural next step.

What Heidelapp Does

As the app itself puts it, you can find all Heidelblog and Heidelcast content in one convenient app. Heidelapp launched in August 2024, and the team celebrated with a special Heidelcast livestream. Listeners joined from as far away as Brisbane, Australia and Liberia, West Africa, a good picture of how far this ministry reaches.

The app includes:

The app is free, works on iPhone, iPad and Android, and collects no user data. The most recent iPhone update arrived alongside the reveal of the new Heidelblog logo.

Here is a look at the app. Notice how the design carries the ministry’s classic red and parchment style, and how the tabs for the Heidelblog and the Heidelcast stay within easy reach on every screen.

Key Features That Stand Out

Blog and Podcast, Together

Many ministries publish in several places and leave their audience to stitch it together. Heidelapp puts the written and spoken work side by side. A reader can finish an article on the Heidelblog and move straight to a related Heidelcast episode without leaving the app.

Listen Anywhere

The Heidelcast is long form teaching, and long form teaching is best enjoyed on the go. The built in player makes it easy to listen in the car, at the gym or around the house, while the episode page shows notes and links for anyone who wants to dig deeper.

A Deep Archive

With well over a thousand episodes since 2009 and years of articles, the Heidelblog is a library as much as a blog. The app opens that library to readers who might never have found an older series on the covenant, the means of grace or the history of the Reformation.

Built for Questions

The Heidelcast has always invited its audience in. Listeners can call or text the Heidelphone, send voice memos, or email questions, and many of those questions become Heidelminicast episodes. In fact, the app itself was the subject of one of those episodes. Having every answer in one app makes the conversation easier to follow.

Clean, Private and Free

Heidelapp is free to download and does not collect user data. For a teaching ministry supported by donations, that simplicity matters. The app exists to serve readers and listeners, not to track them.

A Perfect 5.0 Rating

Ratings are one of the most honest signals an app can earn. At the time of writing, Heidelapp holds a perfect 5.0 rating from its iPhone users and a strong 4.6 rating on Android. That says a lot about the experience: the content loads quickly, it is easy to find, and readers and listeners feel at home.

It also says something about the relationship between a teacher and an audience. The Heidelblog’s readers are thoughtful and engaged, and many have followed Dr. Clark’s work for years. Earning their approval on two platforms is a real accomplishment for any ministry.

Who the App Serves

Heidelapp serves a clearly defined audience, and that focus is part of its strength. It is built for:

Because the Heidelberg Reformation Association is supported by donations, the app also gives readers who benefit from the ministry an easy path to support its work.

What This App Shows About AppPresser

The Heidelblog website, heidelblog.net, runs on WordPress, and that matters. The site already holds the ministry’s articles, podcast episodes, series pages and resource lists. With AppPresser, that content does not need to be rebuilt somewhere else. The app draws from the same WordPress site the team already manages every day.

For a ministry that publishes as often as this one, that is a big deal. When a new article goes up, a new Heidelcast episode is released, or a new series begins, the team works in the tools it already knows. The website and the app stay in step, and the people writing and recording do not have to become full time mobile developers.

Heidelapp also shows how a content focused AppPresser app can feel polished and personal. A custom design that matches the ministry’s brand, bottom tabs for its two main channels and an in app audio player turn a busy website into a focused mobile experience.

Congratulations to Dr. R. Scott Clark and the entire Heidelberg Reformation Association team on building an app that has earned a perfect 5.0 rating.
